This commentary discusses what Myanmar stands to gain by ratifying the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC). The advantages include 1) reintegrating the country back into the international community; 2) reducing the biological threats to Myanmar's people and its neighbors; 3) meeting other important nonproliferation obligations, such as UN Security Council Resolution 1540; 4) boosting internal economic development; and 5) helping prevent non-state actors from acquiring biological materials for illicit purposes.
