This brief explores how China’s burgeoning global trade and investment activities have compelled Chinese officials to step in and protect their fellow citizens and corporate assets in external crises, specifically in Africa and the Middle East. The brief's author also suggests ways that Beijing might improve its crisis response capabilities and avenues of engagement in the above regions.
