This paper describes the debates that exist over the alleged links between "masculinity" and conflict, war, and genocide in Africa. At play in the ongoing disputes are 1) different understandings of masculinity, which are linked to problematic assumptions about gender, and 2) establishing an actual connection between various conceptions of masculinity and socio-political practices.
