This brief highlights what we should look for as the US crafts its FY2017 defense budget. The primary areas of interest include 1) the political infighting that will occur over the budget as a whole; 2) where the Pentagon will find $22 billion in spending cuts; 3) the budget adjustments that will occur in three areas -- acquisition, organization, and compensation; 4) the investment tradeoffs that have to occur between force structure maintenance and modernization; 5) the investment "bets" that are necessary for the future; 6) the needed funding for overseas contingency operations, primarily in response to terrorist and Russian aggression in Europe, etc.
