In this US Congressional testimony, CNAS’ Julianne Smith highlights the strains the European Union is currently experiencing. The external problems include the migration crisis, the threat of terrorism, and a resurgent Russia, while the internal ones include the rise of right wing parties, the possibility of a Brexit, Europe’s weak economies, and a loss of faith in the European Project as a whole. Smith further speculates on the potential impact all these problems could have on US foreign policy; explains how Washington might help shape the future of the European Union; urges the US Congress to OK the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP); and explains why the UK should remain a part of the EU.
