This backgrounder reviews how the Republican and Democratic Parties select their candidates for the US Presidency. It specifically examines 1) the nature of the caucus and primary systems used by both parties; 2) the part that party delegates and super-delegates play in the selection of candidates; and 3) the influence unaffiliated voters have on selecting presidential candidates.
