As its title suggests, this brief highlights the number of conflicts and battlefield deaths that have occurred in the world since 1946. For example, the brief's authors note that 1) the number of conflicts in the world rose in 2013 and 2014, but they too are no match for the totals racked up in the early 1990s; 2) since the Korean War, battle casualties have generally been declining; and 3) due to the civil wars in Syria and Iraq, conflict casualties have spiked to their highest level in 25 years, but they remain far below the levels that existed during the Cold War.
