This brief analyzes the current security environment in the Baltic Sea region and stresses the need for deeper defense cooperation in the area. The text's author specifically argues that it is in the interests of Finland and Sweden to facilitate greater NATO/US engagement in Nordic defense. By helping develop NATO's Readiness Action Plan and Baltic Air Policing initiative, or abetting US forces stationed in Europe, Finnish and Swedish defense cooperation would provide new security opportunities for Western stakeholders in the region and help develop needed Nordic-Baltic standards for smart defense.
