This paper highlights the opportunities for greater energy cooperation between Ethiopia and other regional stakeholders in Africa. It specifically argues that an opportunity for greater cooperation now exists because of 1) the construction of Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD); 2) the recent trade agreement between the South African Development Community (SADC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the East African Community; and 3) a growing interest in regional power pooling. Such cooperation, however, will only be sustainable if power supplies continue to grow in Africa and local states adopt regional attitudes towards regional issues.
