This paper discusses how Chinese President Xi Jinping has consolidated his power, primarily by transforming his country’s domestic politics and pursuing a more assertive foreign policy. As part of their analysis, the text's authors also examine Xi's background and beliefs, the economic problems China now faces, and the new grand strategy the US should pursue in Asia. In the last case, Washington should accomplish something that may be easier said than done -- i.e., avoid a US-China confrontation while also maintaining US primacy in Asia.
