This paper explores the recent policies and practices that have reinforced the EU's tangled approach to security and migration. More specifically, the text's author 1) discusses the policy instruments Brussels and its members have adopted, including preemptive ones, to relieve their migratory pressures; 2) highlights prevalent policy and sociocultural discourses that represent migration as a threat to national security and social cohesion; 3) considers why recent migration crises have posed new challenges for the EU; and 4) explores whether adopting a human security paradigm could contribute to a new, rights-based response to mass migration.
