This analysis discusses the obstacles China faces in “rebalancing” its socio-economic development. More specifically, the text’s authors 1) analyze the peculiarities of Chinese state capitalism and its role in the domestic automobile and IT industries; 2) highlight the roles environmentalism and labor unrest are playing in the country’s development; and 3) take stock of Beijing’s institutional reform efforts, to include the enforcement of existing laws.
