This paper argues that the UK's basic inclination is to relinquish its full membership in the EU and that Brussels will have to accommodate accordingly. Against this backdrop, the text’s author discusses 1) the UK’s role within the EU; 2) British demands to renegotiate its terms of membership; and 3) the costs of keeping the UK within the EU, adjusting its level of integration, or letting it go. Ultimately, the author recommends opting for as much compromise as possible within the existing treaty framework.
