This policy note analyzes the roles and responsibilities of the international community in the Eritrean migration crisis. (According to UNHCR, 5,000 refugees are leaving the country each month.) In exploring the current crisis, the text's author: 1) refers back to the consequence of the 1998-2000 war with Ethiopia; 2) Eritrea’s suppression of freedom of speech, to include muzzling its media; 3) the country's human rights violations, indefinite national service, and harsh political-economic environment; 4) the EU's reengagement with the Eritrean government and its attempts to provide development aid since December 2015; and 5) the imposition of UN sanctions on the country for its alleged support to the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization and its failure to resolve its ongoing territorial dispute with Djibouti.
