The 12 articles in this compendium examine irregular migration, human trafficking and people smuggling through the lenses of EU law and policy. More specifically, the various authors consider why EU policies towards these phenomena are the way they are. Some of the issues the authors look at include 1) the cross-border cottage industries that have sprung up to facilitate mass migration; 2) whether there are legitimate alternatives to the criminalization of the unauthorized movement of peoples; 3) how to manage irregular migration within the EU; 4) the relationship between trafficking and irregular migration; 5) the role which technology plays in human trafficking, and much more.
