This report first demonstrates how the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) - in particular Goals 5 and 16 - can help advance the gender, peace and security agendas of South Africa and the African Continent in general. (One of its strengths is that the SDG’s 2030 Agenda complements past UNSCRs on women, peace and security, which focus solely on conflict and post-conflict situations.) The report then closes by proposing policy recommendations that will help South Africa redress its own gender, peace and security challenges and integrate a gender perspective into its peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding agendas.
