This brief focuses on two problems currently afflicting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): 1) President Joseph Kabila's refusal to go ahead with elections, which are constitutionally required to take place in 2016, and 2) the country’s ongoing violence and poverty. The text’s author contends that unless the United States, the European Union and other international actors take a more active role in the DRC and Africa’s Great Lakes region, a new wave of violence will almost certainly ensue.
