This briefing discusses the complex issues that surround Jerusalem’s Holy Esplanade and the negotiated calm that currently exists over the area, which can be described as fragile at best. More specifically, the author discusses 1) the violent, site-related flare-ups that occurred in 2014 and 2015; 2) why the current calm is not likely to hold; and 3) what might be done to extend the current respite as long as possible.
