The author of this publication documents the democracy deficit in the Arab-Muslim world. He compares different Mediterranean countries with regard to their level of political freedom. He then points out not only the benefits but also the risks of democratization in the region. The author also outlines and assesses the EU's democracy promotion and human rights aid projects in the region. He concludes with a set of policy recommendations.
