This publication discusses the relationship between religion and politics in the Southern Mediterranean and its consequences for the democratization and peaceful co-existence of the different confessional communities in the region. The author draws attention to the connection between religious and political discourse in the region and highlights the dangers this poses for Europe's multicultural society model. The paper concludes by proposing secularization and inter-religious dialogue as a tool for the acceleration of democratic processes.
