This commentary looks at how Vladimir Plahotniuc, who is one of the wealthiest leaders of the Democratic Party of Moldova, has increasingly concentrated political and economic power in his own hands. Indeed, the text’s author contends that Plahotniuc has gained control over Moldova’s judiciary and economic structures, has subordinated the greater part of the country’s parliament, and is rapidly tightening his grip over other parts of the state. Given this state of affairs, the prospects for reform in Moldova are poor, despite Plahotniuc’s lack of popularity amongst the public.
