This commentary analyzes how the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party in Macedonia has consolidated its power since 2006, and how no effective political opposition has developed in its wake. The text also looks at 1) the status of the Albanian minority population in the country; 2) how the EU failed to promote further democratization in Macedonia after a wave of local protests in 2015; and 3) how the migration crisis has affected recent attempts to implement liberal reforms.
