This paper looks at how Indonesia has interacted with ASEAN from the fall of Suharto up to the present. It concludes that Jakarta’s role within the organization has historically fluctuated. Although it has tirelessly promoted regional security integration, Indonesia has usually displayed inert – or outright negative – attitudes towards regional economic integration. It’s a bifurcated approach, the text’s author concludes, that the Jokowi administration will sustain, if not worsen, in the future.
