This commentary reviews the recent gains made by Euro-skeptic parties across Europe, both at the regional and national levels. As a result, a growing tension now exists. The parties’ impact on the legislative processes in both the European Council and Parliament has thus far been minimal, but the crumbling of the European consensus is increasingly constraining the ability of national governments to craft compromises at the EU level, especially when they involve major challenges. So, what should Brussels do? This text’s author believes that it should secure its future by protecting its current level of integration.
