This paper examines the role the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and its doctrines have played in Russian society and politics from 2009 to the present. The text particularly looks at 1) how the ROC has both benefited from and been held hostage by its relations with the Kremlin; 2) the Church's influence on government policies; and 3) the challenges the ROC faces in the future.
