This commentary looks at the diminishing role of the US in the Persian Gulf and broader Middle East, and how Washington should adapt to it. As the text's author sees it, the Gulf's traditional security architecture, which once featured almost exclusive US access and control, is coming to an end. In response, the US should 1) promote and operationalize a burden sharing policy in the region, and 2) establish a strategic dialogue on local rules of the road which potential adversaries such as Russia and China.
