This paper discusses the ways in which sovereignty is asserted, contested, and disputed in present-day Catalonia. It specifically looks at 1) the dual challenge of Catalonian sovereignty; 2) seven factors that have framed the region’s sovereignty debates; 3) the path Catalonians took towards their ‘illegal’ 2015 referendum on independence; and 4) what shockwaves may happen later in 2017.
