This publication reflects on the relationship between the US and Pakistan, arguing that these countries’ interests seem to have aligned in the search for a negotiated settlement of the Afghanistan conflict. In particular, both share the goal of preventing Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for transnational terrorists. However, the text’s author argues that in order to achieve this aim, both Pakistan and the United States need each other. Indeed, while Pakistan is dependent upon the US’ military presence and financial assistance in Afghanistan, Washington needs access to Islamabad’s lines of communication.
