This study looks at the contributions women make to peacekeeping operations, peace-building and generalized security. While supporting this end, the text’s authors take a theoretical approach to the role of gender in peace operations and then match it with field research conducted during an Italian peacekeeping operation in Herat Province, Afghanistan. They conclude that 1) the military alone cannot solve conflicts; 2) peacekeeping personnel briefings should include a gender perspective; and 3) achieving gender equality is a complex process that will outlast any one peacekeeping operation.
