This publication presents an analysis of six factors that stand in the way of effectively preventing interpersonal violence in South Africa, and gives recommendations on how to overcome them. These factors are 1) a lack of coherence and agreement about what constitutes violence prevention; 2) a lack of knowledge about existing violence prevention interventions and programs; 3) insufficient agreement on what interventions to prioritize; 4) the level of trauma suffered by the workforce; 5) inappropriate resource allocation; and 6) a lack of knowledge about how to scale-up interventions that work.
