According to this brief, Sweden continues to hesitate about joining NATO, despite the “considerable security deficit” it now has vis-à-vis a Russia. Indeed, the current center-left government is trying to square the circle by pursuing very close bilateral defense ties with the US, Finland and NATO, while also remaining formally unaligned. It’s an approach that has succeeded to an amazing degree thus far, but will it continue to work in the future?
