This paper briefly overviews the 14 July 2016 terrorist attack in Nice, France; the domestic security context in which the attack took place; and what counterterrorism lessons Australia can learn from the attack. In the latter case, Canberra should 1) review its counterterrorism practices, particularly in relation to public gatherings and the armed forces’ role in domestic security; 2) enhance its counterterrorism strategic communications efforts; and 3) and review its first response capabilities down to the territorial and local levels.
