This publication features a collection of papers from the Institute for National Strategic Studies' (INSS) Annual Asia-Pacific Symposium, held March 2000. The papers center on security-relevant developments in the Asia Pacific region. Contributors discuss China's ethnic diversity as a threat to its national security, China's defence modernization efforts and Korea's dilemma of being caught between the diverging interests of China and the US. Also discussed are the regional security perspective of the ASEAN, the issue of internal Chinese cohesion, Australia's disparate view of its foreign policy vis-à-vis China, and challenges and potential for Sino-American relations.
