This paper examines international public opinion as part of the efforts to understand and anticipate challenges to US-led hegemony. The paper also assesses the likelihood and consequences of possible US responses to such polls. The author summarizes some conservative rules of interpretation, drawing inferences from poll responses pertinent to public opinion, and analyzes in particular public opinion polls conducted since 11 September 2001.
