This paper analyzes the role of the private sector in critical infrastructure protection in the United States. The author details the increased vulnerability of the physical and cyber infrastructure on which US economic prosperity is based and highlights the heightened threats to US critical infrastructures since 11 September 2001. The paper explains that with approximately 85 percent of critical US infrastructures privately owned or operated, the private sector has emerged as an important actor in the field of homeland security in the United States.
