This paper describes Iraqi resistance to the US occupation from March 2003 until the handover of limited sovereignty to the interim Iraqi government in June 2004. The author details how the resistance largely came from domestic Iraqi actors, but also foreign fighters and jihadists who came to Iraq to violently resist the US occupation. The paper places a greater emphasis on the actions of resistance rather than the modes of resistance, and details the actions of both sub-state and non-state actors in the Iraqi resistance.
