This paper examines the organizational structure and military capabilities of the Mexican armed forces. The authors argue that the armed forces are professional and well respected in Mexico, and that many Mexicans depend on the forces for medical services, physical and human development, and disaster relief. The paper concludes that despite problems and challenges in the past, the Mexican armed forces have made significant strides toward becoming vital and professional institutions within a country that is taking its place alongside other democracies.
