This paper discusses the relationship between the United States and NATO. The author addresses the issue of whether the constraints on the US use of force embodied in NATO's mode of operation are worth the benefits derived from them. The paper offers recommendations on future policies and concludes that a central desideratum in US national security policy should be to retain the tangible and legitimate benefits of transatlantic multilateralism while minimizing constraints on the effective use of force.
