This paper offers a detailed comparison between the character of irregular warfare, insurgency in particular, and the principal enduring features of the American way of war. The author argues that traditional ways of warfare are not very efficient in fighting an irregular enemy. The paper concludes that a positve transformation of the American way of war is possible.
