This briefing examines what lies behind some of the most commonly held assumptions about Papua and the Papuan independence movements. It argues that Papua is neither a place of persecution and oppression controlled by non-Papuans, nor are allegations of genocide by security forces well-founded. It sugests that correcting these misconceptions can lead to better policies on the part of Indonesia and the international community.
