This paper discusses the role of diplomacy in international crises using the Balkans as an example. Firstly, it provides a general historical overview of the development of international relations in Europe. Next, the paper considers the role of bilateral diplomacy and so-called "multilateral diplomacy" in the Balkans. Additionally, it highlights the importance of regional forms of co-operation through international institutions such as the European Union and the OSCE.
