This paper examines the impact of UN sanctions on Iraq after the First Gulf War. The author describes the aim of the sanctions against Iraq and assesses their influence on Iraq's economy, society and political system. The author also provides recommendations for further policies against Iraq. The paper concludes that the Iraqi experience has been humbling for believers in the use of sanctions to accomplish US foreign policy aims.
