This paper discusses trends in French security policy after the Cold War and describes the challenge of adapting French policy to a world in transition. The author examines several key issues such as France's relationship with the EU and NATO and the country's nuclear forces. The paper concludes that the French have increasingly emphasized the international aspects of their security policy and that the role of national defense remains important within the French concept, but even more the task has been seen to use national assets to influence the evolution of the European and regional security contexts.
