This paper discusses the correlation between open societies and power in the age of globalization and information. Its hypothesis is that, although power remains important in world politics, globalization has transformed its character, correlates and consequences. According to the author, power depends on freedom. The paper concludes that US power is intrinsic and safe, more so in the information age than ever before, and that the success, liberty and happiness of Americans are not assured by US supremacy but by the creation of a peaceful, and powerful, community of democracies.
