This commentary analyzes a number of reforms on German Chancellor Angela Merkel's agenda. The authors propose that much more drastic steps need to be taken in certain areas, including higher education reforms, socio-economic reforms and the development of new industries and services, such as biomedical and green energy technologies, to replace the economic reliance on the export of automobiles and machine tools.
