The paper traces the origins of Vladimir Nabokov, the most un-Russian writer in Russia, to St. Petersburg, the most "Western" of Russian cities. The author details various phases of Nabokov's life and describes how he was able to take on a journey that took him from the enclosed nature of the 19th century Russian culture to the opposite extreme with the openness of 20th century America.
