With one quarter of its inhabitants’ homes destroyed in the past year, Nusaybin, Turkey is a prime victim of Ankara’s 33-year conflict with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The Turkish government’s efforts to compensate the town’s residents for their losses is notable, observes this ICG report, but 1) managing the conflict’s socio-political fallout; 2) addressing the grievances of Kurdish movement sympathizers; and 3) respecting Kurdish rights will be crucial to avoid further violence.
