This paper examines the issue of Mediterranean security and the lack of a concerted trans-Atlantic policy in this area. The author explains the specific strategic vision of both NATO and the EU for the Mediterranean area and describes the main aspects of cooperation mechanisms in place. The author further argues that neither organization has provided a credible response to the security needs of the southern Mediterranean littoral states. At the same time, the author states that the diversity of these approaches should be regarded as an asset, not a constraint.
