This policy brief looks at the problem of illegal immigration in Southern Spain and analyzes the success of Spanish border control policies. It suggests that stringent enforcement of such policies do not address the fundamental problems at the root of the migratory flow into Spain. The author argues that the EU should focus on the linkages between immigration, integration and development policies in an adequate manner, rather than simply manning geographic borders.
