This text looks at the emergence of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan and Pakistan and how it has impacted two established actors in the region, the Taliban and al-Qaida (AQ). The piece’s author further examines what has happened to AQ since 2001, when the borderland between Afghanistan and Pakistan served as ‘ground zero’ for the movement.
